Project Overview
Looking for a deck builder in Blackburn South?
This Blackburn South project involved the construction of a full-width Merbau timber deck to complement a new extension to the home.
The deck was designed to create a warm and practical connection between the newly extended living space and the backyard, providing a generous outdoor area for entertaining, relaxing and everyday family use.
The rich natural tones of Merbau timber give the finished deck a classic Australian outdoor appearance, while the carefully detailed board layout creates a clean and refined finish.

Project Type
Full-Width Deck • Mitred Step-Down • Breaker Board Detailing
-
One of the key construction details was managing the transition between the main deck and the lower backyard.
-
A mitred step-down section was incorporated into the deck, creating a clean change in level while maintaining the visual flow of the Merbau boards.
-
Careful detailing was also required around the deck edges and the central and side breaker boards to keep the finished decking lines crisp and consistent.
Client Goal
The project was centred around creating a substantial outdoor living area that worked naturally with the home's new extension.
The full-width deck provides a generous transition from the house into the backyard, while the pergola adds shade and weather protection over the entertaining area.
The design also needed to provide a practical connection between the elevated deck and the lawn.
Challenges
VicBuilt constructed a full-width Merbau timber deck with a carefully detailed step-down leading towards the lawn.
A breaker board was incorporated through the deck and around the side edges, creating defined lines within the decking layout and giving the finished project a more refined appearance.
The combination of the Merbau decking and timber pergola creates a cohesive outdoor space that feels like a natural extension of the house.
Solution
The finished Blackburn South project provides the homeowners with a substantial outdoor entertaining area that connects the new extension with the backyard.
The natural Merbau decking gives the space warmth and character, while the step-down creates an easy transition towards the lawn.
The addition of the timber pergola and corrugated roof also means the outdoor area can be used more comfortably in different weather conditions.
The result is a practical and inviting outdoor living space combining Merbau decking, detailed joinery and a custom timber pergola.
