A standout feature is the sunken fire pit / seating nook built into the corner of the deck — a square recessed bench box with composite-clad walls and bench seating on three sides, backfilled with decorative pebble stone for a fire pit base. It creates a natural gathering spot without eating into usable deck space.
A solid timber front entry deck in a rich Merbau tone, built around the home's brick entrance and portico. The deck steps down in stages to follow the natural slope of the block, tying the front door landing into a lower deck section near the driveway/side path. A standout detail is the built-in LED deck lighting, recessed flush into the boards along the edges.
Composite Deck — Backyard Entertaining Area
A large, elevated composite deck built off the rear of the home in a rich two-tone brown woodgrain finish. Boards run in a clean, consistent linear pattern with tight, even spacing, giving a smart, low-maintenance alternative to timber decking that won't warp, splinter, or need re-oiling.
A stunning curved Merbau timber deck built around a kidney-shaped in-ground pool, showcasing warm, rich timber tones that complement the mosaic tiled pool edge beautifully. The deck sweeps in a smooth arc following the pool's curved end, with tight-fitting boards laid in a continuous run for a seamless, high-end finish.
A sleek composite deck wrapping around a contemporary home, finished in a warm caramel-toned woodgrain composite that runs seamlessly from the sliding glass doors out to a stone-topped outdoor kitchen bench.
A tired old brick garage was transformed into a fully clad pool room with beautiful spotted gum decking. I also re-skinned the garage in smooth, weatherboard-style cement sheet cladding over a new timber frame, with the original brick shell reinforced and battened out before sheeting. As these decking project photos show, the build is finished with a batten screen for an outdoor shower.
A full-width Merbau timber deck built to complement a new home extension, featuring a mitred step-down section leading to the lawn. Clean, tight board runs and quality joinery give this deck a warm, natural finish that will deepen with age.
A timber pergola built off the rear of the home, framed in dressed pine with a corrugated roof set on a slight lean-to pitch, creating a shaded, all-weather entertaining area over the deck below. The deck itself is finished with a set of steps leading down to the yard, detailed with a breaker board running along the middle and side edges for a crisp, defined line.
A clever built-in feature at the top step — a recessed timber-lined box set flush into the decking — adds a functional design touch. Countersunk stainless screws and tight, even board spacing give a clean, quality fit and finish, with the natural Merbau tones set to deepen further with a bit of sun and oil over time.
A striking timber deck built for a statement front entrance, with wide, full-width steps leading up to a set of ornate double black entry doors.
A custom Merbau deck featuring a built-in L-shaped bench seat, complete with hinged lift-up lids for hidden storage underneath — perfect for cushions, pool toys, or outdoor gear. Set above weed mats and subfloor protection, the deck runs alongside a servery window through to the home, making it easy to pass food and drinks straight out to the seating area. I also built a pailing fence.Â
Beautiful Merbau deck with a picture-frame border!
Merbau Deck with Bench Seating & Pergola
A freshly oiled Merbau deck showing off its rich, glossy finish under a black steel-post pergola frame — the perfect setup for a shaded outdoor retreat. Built-in bench seating runs along the rear fence line, giving extra seating without cluttering the space with furniture.
A spacious composite deck built as a low-maintenance outdoor entertaining space, laid in a grey-brown woodgrain finish with clean picture-framed borders defining each section. Recessed LED deck lights are set flush into the boards, providing subtle ambient lighting for evening use without any visible fittings.
Queensland Blonde decking. A nice light coloured decking board to replace the old tired deck that lived there before.
A freshly oiled Merbau deck showing off its deep, glossy red-brown finish, built off the rear of a brick home and running the full width of the living area. Wide steps lead down from the main deck, giving a clean, tiered transition to the yard below. The project also included a timber screen to conceal the water tank.
This Craigieburn project included a new Merbau deck and a stained timber retaining wall.
One of VicBuilt’s earlier deck and pergola projects.
A new deck and a new friend. A deck that was dangerous to walk on was transformed into a great outdoor space with some beautiful Merbau boards.
Boards are laid tight and even, with natural colour variation across the Merbau giving it plenty of character before it settles and darkens with sun and time. Set neatly around an existing tap point, with a solid fascia edge finishing the deck off flush against the surrounding concrete and brickwork. A simple, solid deck that ties the alfresco area into the backyard.
A striking Queensland Blonde timber deck built between charcoal-rendered walls, with a matching horizontal timber screen wall used to clad an existing brick section — cleverly incorporating a fully concealed hidden door within the batten pattern for discreet side access.
Merbau deck built under a full timber-framed pergola with polycarbonate roof sheeting, letting natural light flood through while still providing shelter from the elements. Post supports run down to the deck, tying the pergola structure neatly into the timber below, and the rich red-brown Merbau tones show off beautifully.
A large, freshly oiled Merbau deck built for a family backyard, deep red-brown in tone with a glossy finish that shows off the timber's rich grain. The deck overlooks a kid-friendly backyard complete with a swing set, trampoline, and play equipment, making it the perfect vantage point for keeping an eye on the little ones while entertaining.
A Merbau timber deck built around an in-ground pool, featuring a striking vertical-batten privacy screen that doubles as a stair balustrade, adding both safety and style to the change in level.
