This Ashwood project transformed an old brick garage and surrounding backyard into a modern pool room and outdoor entertaining area.
The existing brick structure was reinforced and fitted with a new timber framework before being reclad with smooth, weatherboard-style fibre cement cladding. A custom Spotted Gum timber deck was then constructed to connect the new pool room with the surrounding outdoor area.
A timber batten privacy screen was also incorporated around the outdoor shower, creating a practical feature that complemented the new decking and pool-room design.

One of the key aspects of this project was working with the existing brick garage structure rather than starting with a completely new building.

There were additional details to work around, including wall junctions, drainage and pipework visible throughout the construction photos, as well as the outdoor shower and privacy-screen area.
Client Goal
The aim was to transform an underused existing structure and surrounding outdoor area into a more functional and visually cohesive part of the home.
The project needed to combine the new pool room with a quality outdoor entertaining space, while also incorporating practical features such as access to the pool area and privacy around the outdoor shower.
The finished design needed to feel contemporary while still making good use of the existing brick structure.
Challenges
VicBuilt reinforced the existing brick structure and constructed a new timber framework before the building was reclad in smooth, weatherboard-style fibre cement cladding.
A Spotted Gum timber deck was then built alongside the new pool room, creating a warm natural transition between the building and the pool area.
The deck was carefully finished around existing wall details and drainage points, while a custom vertical timber batten screen was installed to create privacy around the outdoor shower.
Glass balustrading was incorporated around the finished deck and pool area, helping maintain an open connection between the decking and surrounding backyard.
Solution
The completed project turned an old brick garage into a modern pool room while creating a completely new outdoor entertaining environment around it.
The Spotted Gum decking provides a natural timber finish that works beautifully alongside the pool, while the timber privacy screen adds both function and visual continuity to the outdoor shower area.
The result is more than simply a new deck — it is a complete backyard transformation, combining a converted pool room, custom timber decking, pool surrounds and outdoor privacy features into one cohesive outdoor space.
